Mark Kelso is in that league. I think many are, they might not be famous but they definetely got their shit together.
Who's Mark Kelso, and what leading latin, jazz, and pop musicians does he tour and record with?
Please hip me to him as I found nothing online.
He has a nice site, and he's very accomplished. But the only notables he's played with are Gino Vanelli and Holly Cole, both artists not very active in this day and age. He hasn't really performed with any artists that are at the top of their field.
If a drummer was that competent and that well versed his resume would be more mainstream, and he would be getting called by the worlds best artists and musicians to make music.
Not to knock Mark though. He sounds nice on his site. I was looking for more drummers along the versatile profile line. Drummers that have played the genres with musicians at the top of the genre. For example, Hass sometimes plays with Brazilian guitar god Homero Lubambo, who's actually a top guitarist in Brazil as well as in the US.

With my respect, Flarobstix, as you, I like Steve Hass a lot, but you are getting boring saying (always) that HASS is the MOTHER NATURE of the drums.
I think you aren?t doing a favor to him saying that, or doing direct comparisons between Hass and other drummers.

Juan, you're not getting it. Along with the other guys, we're looking for additional drummers who do the same thing.
There are no comparisons only facts about what certain drummers play and what they don't. Don't try to read between the lines and make your own derogatory meanings. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not putting anyone down, just looking to find more drummers who are involved in every part of the music business.
Again, you said true, I'm waiting for names. Drummers who I can check out that are as diverse as Hass, truly playing the style, not faking it, who have serious credits under each style? Very true? Ok, let me in on them.

There's way more there than Gino and Holy. And the guy produces, composes, records and sings. For having seen him twice, Mark is in the major leagues.
Another one that comes to mind is Paul Brochu. But you won't find a website. He's way too busy to chat, blog and maintain a site.
yeah this dude has done some playing. What I don't get is how he can list names like that. I don't have him on any Brecker albums or Paquito albums, and I certainly never heard of him touring with those guys, as I've been a fan of those guys for over 15 years.
Can someone tell me how I can hear Mark as a part of Breckers band?
Never heard of this other guy either. But Gary Novack out here in LA can handle many many different situations. Although, I've never heard him play serious clave Rob.
P.S I don't think a website takes anytime out of an artists schedule when most of them hire people to do the work. Most great players who are very busy have sites, or sites you can find them on like drummerworld.

You know, this seems kinda silly ... there are a great many styles. Can Hass play Naningo styles authentically? That about Pakistani? Taiko? What out a drummer who can play various african styles, middle eastern styles, second line, blues, funk, etc, but is't so hot at stright ahead be-bop? What about hip hop? Gospel? Lots of "funk" players can't play gospel right. obody's mentioed Rock yet. There are tons of disparate rock styles. He good at Black Metal?
Its silly though - you're lookig for someoe who has the exact list of abilities that Hass has. There are a ton of players - a TON - who have are log on talent and experiece who aren't famous.
Theres local drummer here who ca play left foot clave and solo over it (He got a gig with a Salsa band and learned how to play and solo over left foot clave in a week, the SOB) This guy can hit the drums exactly in the same spot (the size of a quarter) every time if he wants. (He just wanted to practice gettig the best toe out of the drum every time!) He's plays salsa, big band, straight ahead, rock, blues, funk, etc etc. (he's got a eat trick of playing the ostinato bass drum, clave with hes left foot, cascara on the right, and a half time clave with the left)
He's not famous - not even here in Thailand. he's got somethig of reputation here, to be sure, but not the most famous drummer here.
And Thailand doesn't exactly have a really happening music scene. Doesn't pay so well out here. While i'll admit to never having heard of Hass before this thread, I'll wager that my friend is not as good as him. It'd be a pretty safe bet, even. But he's a great player with precision and talent and versatility. There really are tons of guys like that hanging about.
How is it silly to want to know about other extremely versatile drummers? And yes, if you go to Hass' site the opening piece is a nanigo. Hass' latin abilty goes far beyond that groove. He's also very well versed in Middle Eastern styles such as Tsiftetelli. I'm from Armenian decent so at my first lesson with him we did go over a few grooves like that. Hass also plays with Armenian superstar Hooshere Bizdikian. I honestly don't believe there's another drummer alive that can go on tour with an authentic Armenian singer and then play be-bop with Christian McBride, or play latin with Danilo Perez, and then play African with Richard Bona, and then play on a Jennifer Love Hewitt pop track.
If there is, I would like to know so I can check them out and learn.
What's silly about that Mr drummerforhire?
